Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay was one of the best writers of Bengali literature. Saratchandra Chattopadhyay was born on 15 September, 1876 in the village of Debanandapur in Hooghly district to an ordinary poor Brahmin family.

His teenage and first life was spent at his uncle’s house in Bhagalpur. When Saratchandra was five years old, his father Motilal Chattopadhyay enrolled him in the Pari Pandit School of Debanandapur where he studied for two or three years and then while he was in Bhagalpur, his uncle enrolled him in the Durgacharan Boys’ School.

In ‘1887’ he was admitted to Bhagalpur Zilla School but when his father left his job there they were forced to return to Debanandapur, forcing him to drop out of school there and after coming to Bengal he was admitted to Hooghly Branch School but sadly to give school free He had to leave the school because he could not.

Later, in 1893, Motilal returned to Bhagalpur and enrolled at the Tej Narayan Jubilee Collegiate School. In 1894, he passed the entrance examination in the second division and was admitted to the Tej Narayan Jubilee College. But he could not sit for the examination as he could not pay the examination fee of that college.

Then he concentrated on writing literature and during this time he wrote novels like Baradidi, Devdas, Chandranath, Shubhada etc. and composes stories of Atulanya Prem (Incomparable Love), Alo O Chhaya (Light and Shadow),Bojha (understanding), Haricharan etc.

After the publication of his short-novel Baro Didi in Bharati Patrika, Saratchandra’s chat created interest in him among the readers and critics and he gained popularity among the readers with incredible speed.

Later, when Charitraheen (Characterless) was published as book form, 400 copies of the book were sold in one day, which was not the record of anyone else in Bengali literature. He then wrote novels like Ramer Sumati, Path-Nirdesh, Bindur Chhele (Son of Bindu), Strir Mulya (Women’s Value), Charitraheen (Characterless) etc. while he was in Rangoon. Then he did not have to look back. Enlightened by the light of Bengali literature, he created an extreme stir of Bengali literature all over India.

Some of his novels have been published directly in book form, such as Bamuner Meye (Daughter of Bramman). In this episode he wrote stories and novels like BirajBou, Pandit Moshai, Boikunther Will, Mejo Didi, Palli Samaj, Arakshaniya, Niskriti, Grihadaha, Dena-Paona, Mahesh, Pather Dabi, Shesh Prashna (Last Question), Naba Bidhan etc.

In a very short period of time, he became so popular and immortal in the creation of Bengali literature that it really became rare in Bengali literature. He died on 16th January, 1938 at the age of 61.
