We have read science books written in Bengali on astrology since our childhood; how much joy and curiosity would arise in the boy’s mind after reading the descriptions of the moon, sun, planets and satellites in these books. The name of the author of this book comes to mind as Nabin Chandra Dutta. We do not know whether books on astrology were written in Bengali or not.
We have read books by many authors on the history of Bengali literature; however, there were only a few Bengali books on science published by the Bangla Sahitya Parishad at that time; this has given us the impression that the various science books that were written in Bengali forty-fifty years ago are no longer being written today. Yet, the number of Bengali writers, the number of readers, and the number of printing houses have increased so much compared to that time. The cost of printing books has probably also decreased considerably.
What is the importance of science books?
A few days ago, two or four books on physics, chemistry, and botany were written for school students, but now, unless a book is written in the format or size prescribed by the government, it is not allowed in school. Therefore, the promotion of scientific books as school textbooks is not seen much.
Is there no respect for scientific books among the public outside the school? Is there no respect for them now that there was fifty years ago? Why has the seed of the minds of Krishnamohan Bandyopadhyay, Rajendralal Mitra, Akshay Kumar Dutta and others been sown in such a fruitless manner? When this book called “Akasher Galpa” was suddenly published, such a question arose in our minds. However, the author has come to fill a gap in Bengali literature, and therefore, we have the utmost respect for the author.
Who wrote the Science Book Akasher Galpa?
This book on science, “Akasher Galpa”, is written for general readers. This book has been compiled from all the articles published by the author in monthly magazines like Sahitya, Bharat Mahila, Aarti etc. Most of the material in this book has been compiled from English books. The author has also taken help from a few articles written by Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury, one of the pioneers of children’s literature and a famous painter. Mainly, the description of the celestial bodies in the sky has been compiled in it. No attempt has been made to explain any difficult or mysterious principles of astrology. Such an attempt in a book of this class would probably have been fruitless. The language of our book has been rendered in such a clear manner that no one will have any difficulty in understanding its significance.
What is scientific book?
Writing a scientific book is actually very difficult. Therefore, the author has published the book “Akasher Galpa” with great trepidation. It is not easy to understand what the celestial bodies look like when observed with the help of a telescope; it is not easy to understand it by just reading the description. In foreign books, an attempt is made to explain it to some extent by giving good illustrations. It was impossible to give such illustrations in this country at that time. It is not easy for a Bengali author to bear the cost of elaborate illustrations. Keeping all these in mind, the book should be judged and read.
In our opinion, the author has tried his best and with all his might. His zeal and perseverance are praiseworthy. He will not get the fruits of his labor. It does not require any special courage to say this. It is also highly doubtful how much appreciation he will receive from the critics of Bengali literature for his efforts and hard work. I do not see any reason to think that he has any other motivation other than the instinct of selfless literary service.
