Jogesh Chandra Roy was a prominent Bengali writer, scientist, and antiquarian. His ancestral home was in Digra village of Hooghly.
Jogesh Chandra initially studied at the Bankura District School for some time. After his father’s death, he joined the Burdwan Raj School and passed the Entrance (1878), FA (1880) and BA (1882) from Hooghly College with first division. In 1883, he passed the MA with second division as the only student in botany.
Jogesh Chandra first joined Ravenshaw College, Cuttack as a lecturer. Later, he returned to Cuttack after teaching at Calcutta Madrasa, Chittagong College and Presidency College for some time and retired in 1920 after teaching there for about 30 years.
In addition to teaching, he practiced Bengali language for twelve years, astronomy for twelve years and indigenous arts for twelve years. As a result, he acquired deep scholarship in these three subjects. He introduced the practice of eliminating duality in Bengali spelling.
His notable achievements include the discovery of a book called ‘Bashuli Chandidas‘, editing the book Siddhanta Darshan and writing the book Puja Parban. He wrote the biography of Orissa astrologer Chandrasekhar in English and introduced him to the country and abroad. Another special achievement was the creation of a (Bangala Shabdakosh) Bengali dictionary in four volumes.
