About the Author:
Pandit Krishnapada Vidyaratna (Bhattacharya) is widely known and deeply revered for his profound and inquisitive scholarship, his deep and unfeigned piety, and his innate benevolence toward all. He has authored numerous books and booklets, the subject matter of which was typically confined to the traditional domains of Sanskrit scholarship.
However, in the present booklet, he has chosen for himself an entirely new path of inquiry—he has dedicated himself to resolving that vast and complex enigma which constitutes the very source of all light, life, and motion in this universe; which represents a wondrous interplay of various forces; and which serves as the fundamental basis of life’s inscrutable mysteries. Drawing upon the entirety of Eastern and Western Science and Philosophy, he has endeavored to substantiate this theory or viewpoint of his.
Intellectual Journey
Such a bold and novel line of thought is bound to challenge the complacency of many; it is certain to provoke intense and profound criticism—criticism that, even if devoid of malice, remains nonetheless inevitable. Yet, above all else, the author, Krishnapada Vidyaratna (Bhattacharya), has ushered us into a truly fascinating realm of inquiry. For the indomitable courage with which he embarked upon this intellectual journey, and for the consummate skill with which he maintained his course along this arduous path, he is deserving of our gratitude and respect.

The initial translation of this book was undertaken by the author himself, Krishnapada; subsequently, the translator, Jitendralal Bandyopadhyay, meticulously revised and refined nearly the entire text. By virtue of this undertaking, he has established a claim to a deep and intimate connection with this work.
About The book Jiban
This book by author Krishnapada Vidyaratna—which serves as an outline of the subject—is primarily based on ancient scriptures, adapted to suit the modern era.
What is life?
What is life? — To this day, this question remains entirely unresolved. In numerous religious texts—including the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, philosophical treatises, the Quran, and the Bible—many have offered various interpretations; yet no one has hitherto been able to definitively ascertain its subtle essence.
The author was inspired to contemplate this matter: That which constitutes the essence of all-pervading, omnipotent energy—the sole cause behind all phenomena such as fire, electricity, water, motion, and waves—is the all-encompassing, visible solar radiance that permeates the cosmos. Within this solar system, this radiance manifests individually as the ‘Jivatma’ (the individual soul) or “Life,” and collectively as the true nature of the ‘Paramatma’ (the Supreme Soul).
Five Great Elements
On this earth, all living beings are composed of the subtle constituents—or ‘Tanmatras’—of the five great elements (Pancha Mahabhutas): Earth (‘Kshiti’), Water (‘Ap’), Fire (‘Teja’), Air (‘Marut’), and Space (‘Vyoma’). The physical body is a modification of these five elements, and Fire (‘Teja’) is one of the fundamental substances among them. That all-pervading fire—manifesting as electrical energy and waves—is the singular source of all power; indeed, solar radiance ‘is’ life.
Individual Body
Many assert that upon the death of a living being, the individual body—composed of the five elements—dissolves back into the five great elements. The Sun resides in the infinite void, millions of ‘yojanas’ away from the Earth; yet, it is through its radiance that all living beings sustain their existence. These five elements constantly interact with and support one another. Wherever Space (‘Vyoma’) exists—whether within or outside the living body—Radiance (Teja) is present there, in either a manifest or unmanifest form. This Radiance is nothing other than the radiance of the Sun; indeed, all forms of radiance are but fragments of solar radiance.
Rigveda States
In primordial times, at the very inception of creation, the cosmos (‘Akasha’) was shrouded in a veil of nebulous darkness. The ‘Rigveda‘ states: “Tato Ratrirajayata” (Rigveda—’Sandhya-Paddhati’); similarly, the Manu Samhita (Manusmriti)’ observes: “Asididam tamobhutamaprajnatamalakshanam; Apratarkyamavijneyam prasuptamiva sarvatah” (Chapter 1). This implies that (during the cosmic dissolution or ‘Pralaya’), this (visible universe) was enveloped in darkness, unknowable, devoid of distinct characteristics, unfathomable, and inscrutable—as if the entire universe lay in a state of deep slumber. This perspective is also shared by Western scientific scholars.
Final Thoughts
In this Researchable Novel, the author has masterfully delineated the diverse circumstances and challenges that constitute the very foundation of life’s enigmatic mysteries. He has dedicated himself to addressing that vast and complex enigma—the source of all light, vitality, and motion in this world—highlighting the intricate interplay of various forces and the profound mysteries that underpin the journey of life. Drawing upon the entirety of Eastern and Western science and philosophy, he has endeavored to substantiate his theories and perspectives.
