Ayurveda Shiksha (Vol 1–4) by Naliniranjan Sen & A. Gupta
Ayurveda Shiksha (Vol 1–4): A Landmark Bengali Medical Text by Naliniranjan Sen and Amritalal Gupta.
Ayurveda, the ancient system of Indian medicine, is a profound and intricate science. Without a deep understanding of Sanskrit etymology and years of rigorous medical training, it is nearly impossible to grasp its full essence. This complexity has made Ayurvedic knowledge largely inaccessible to the common man—despite the fact that it deals with subjects as vital as life and death.
While books on homeopathic and allopathic medicine are available in simple Bengali and can be understood and applied even by amateur practitioners, Ayurvedic texts have largely remained locked behind the walls of Sanskrit and scholarly obscurity. Even those who study Ayurvedic scriptures seriously often struggle to apply them without the guidance of an experienced physician.
The Problem: No Symptom-Based Guide in Ayurveda
One key reason for Ayurveda’s limited popular reach is the lack of symptom-based treatment guides. Ancient sages structured their writings around the properties of herbs and diseases—like fever or cough—rather than providing guidance on complex real-world conditions where multiple symptoms or diseases overlap. For instance, they did not offer clear advice on what to do when two or more illnesses co-occur, or when serious symptoms evolve within a primary disease.
Had they, or their successors, compiled symptom-wise treatment manuals—like we find in homeopathy or modern medicine—it is almost certain that Ayurveda would have gained far more trust and respect among the masses.
Why Homeopathy Flourished and Ayurveda Didn’t
The success of homeopathy in India owes much to the wide availability of easy-to-read Bengali books that explain the basics of treatment. These books made self-treatment possible, spreading the practice beyond the reach of doctors.
In contrast, the Ayurvedic community has largely ignored the need for public education. Some purists even believe that the original Sanskrit texts are sufficient and that there is no need to reform or simplify them. However, they fail to recognize that wise doctors are not easily available in every village or town. In a country like ours, where medicine can be a matter of life or death, general awareness must reach the grassroots.
Another critical gap is in how our own Ayurvedic doctors handle their knowledge. In Western countries, doctors often publish journals or manuals that consolidate their lifelong experiences for the benefit of future generations. Sadly, in India, the wisdom of a doctor often dies with him, never written down or passed on.
The Solution: Ayurveda Shiksha by Amritalal Gupta
It is precisely this concern that motivated Amritalal Gupta, a long-time practitioner, to compile and publish a Bengali book titled Ayurveda Shiksha, edited by Naliniranjan Sen. This four-volume work attempts to simplify Ayurveda for ordinary people. Like popular homeopathy books, Ayurveda Shiksha aims to make treatment accessible—enabling people to identify symptoms and choose remedies accordingly.
This pioneering book is not just a translation of old texts; it is a novel work shaped by years of practical experience. Its goal is to bridge the vast gap between Ayurvedic theory and real-world treatment.
Ayurveda Shiksha: A Beacon of Hope
It is with this pressing concern that Amritalal Gupta, drawing upon his extensive medical experience, undertook the monumental task of compiling Ayurveda Shiksha. This novel work aims to democratize Ayurvedic knowledge, making it as accessible to the general public as homeopathic books are for preparing medicines. Gupta’s vision is that readers will be able to apply Ayurvedic principles and medicines with greater ease by consulting this book.
