The Story of Indian Art by S K Bhattacharya

S. K. Bhattacharya wrote The Story of Indian Art.

The purpose of the author S. K. Bhattacharya in writing this book is threefold. First, history of Indian art was included in the curriculum of art students in Indian universities in Delhi and Lucknow for the first time. He has the honor of formulating the syllabus for these two places. But he found that the syllabus was not covered by any single book on the history of Indian art, so the need for this book arose primarily to cover the syllabus chosen by the author.

Secondly, most of the extant books on Indian art deal with particular periods of Indian art history and the author hopes that there is a major gap in this field which this book will fill. In this regard he has in mind the general reader who will be able to get a glimpse of their past glory in his book.
Third, although the scope of the book is limitless, it must avoid lengthy debates of scholarly interest to the non-specialist student.

Therefore, this book can claim to be a guide to the general history of Indian art from the first to the twentieth century. This book has a ‘priority’ emphasis on the various architectural movements of Indian history as a backdrop to art. This is largely in line with the development of the plastic industry in India which has been applied to architecture.

Indians were never an architectonic people. The Buddhist Chaityas, Jain and Hindu temples arc all replete with the sculptural quality of the builder. They never aspired towards the heaven like the Gothic churches of Mediaeval Europe. They are firmly based on earth and as such they belong to our world rather than the world beyond.

The author had a very difficult choice in selecting a modern-day artist. Perhaps those chosen do not complete the contemporary development of Indian painting. But only notable artists can find a place in history and as such must be selected by the author’s choice.

This book should be considered as a preliminary introduction to the history of Indian art and cannot claim to be comprehensive. Any errors in the selection or presentation of the subject matter are entirely the author’s own and he warns the reader before turning to the pages of the book. Readers can collect the English novel book The Story of Indian Art from this page and read it online.
