Santosh Chattopadhyay Translated the Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple into Bengali
Santosh Chattopadhyay is an important name in the world of translated literature in Bengali, especially in the translation of mystery and detective stories. He has opened a new horizon of mystery literature to Bengali readers by translating the stories of Agatha Christie’s popular character Miss Marple into Bengali.
Famous translator Santosh Chattopadhyay has published the first volume of the translated Bengali version of two Miss Marple stories originally written by Agatha Christie— Sagarbelar Khun and Andha Niyoti—which were first published in January 1949.
In these two stories, just as the character of Miss Marple goes out in search of mysteries in a quiet rural environment, she also unravels the tangle of crimes in an international context.
Agatha Christie is a very beloved name for Bengali readers. Like the brainchild of Agatha Christie, the queen of mysteries, ‘Evangelion Poirot‘, another character created by her, Miss Jane Marple, has made a firm place in everyone’s hearts. Miss Marple is an amateur consulting detective who uses her intelligence and powers of observation to solve crimes. Her character is basically a reflection of rural life, where unusual events occur among ordinary people and Marple unravels the mysteries of those events. Miss Marple is known as an elderly unmarried woman and Miss Marple searches for mysteries in the quiet rural environment of St. Mary Mead, sometimes going far beyond its boundaries from that rural area. Two such stories are “The Murder at the Vicarage” and “Blind Destiny.
In a beautiful hotel on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, Miss Marple joins hands with the old millionaire Mr. Rafael and identifies a brutal killer. Then, he travels the country with the kindness of Mr. Raphael himself – and removes the dark curtain of the past and uncovers a forgotten ‘brutal murder, the main theme of which is love.
These two stories are the author’s first attempt among the countless Miss Marple stories. Author Santosh Chatterjee has made it clear that the entire collection of other Miss Marple stories and stories will be published very soon in approximately four more volumes.
The name “Old Rich Mr. Raphael” refers to a character in Agatha Christie’s mystery story “The Murder at the Vicarage” (Sagarbelai Khun in Bengali). In the story, he stayed at a hotel in the lap of the Caribbean Sea and helped Miss Marple identify a murderer.
In these two stories, just as Miss Marple’s character goes out in search of mysteries in a quiet rural environment, she also unravels the tangle of crimes in an international context.
