Introduction
A scene from his childhood still floats before the eyes of the writer Atin Ghosh. His grandmother used to organize the puja of Satyanarayana every Purnima, and his classmate, a young Brahmin, would occasionally come to perform the puja. He would see that his grandmother would come with a pot of Ganga water and sprinkle water before the Brahmin who was performing the puja. She would do the same when she left. The other scene is a little different? The Jamadar would come to clean the toilet of the house. After he left, his grandmother would sprinkle cow dung water on the Jamadar’s way.
Both the priest and the Jamadar come to the house with the intention of doing good to the household. One of the untouchables prayed for the grace of God, while the other did physical labor to ensure the cleanliness of the household by following the rules of hygiene.
The difference? Why this disparity?
In response to all these questions, his grandmother used to say— these are the creations of God. Even then, the writer would have accepted that. Today, he does not accept it, because he has met a great soul. Bhagirath Ambedkar’s life in the 20th century was dedicated to the liberation of the Dalit society. Leaving aside the anger of his personal life, such a ‘complete’ person has not been born in India.
Writer Atin Ghosh has presented the clear course of the struggling life of this great soul Ambedkar in front of the readers in this book. We hope that the readers will appreciate his invaluable writing and relentless and dedicated efforts.
Ambedkar—The Social System of India
Ambedkar’s multifaceted activities had one issue of utmost importance. That was the socio-economic establishment of the Dalit society. He also knew that if the Dalits did not improve in the socio-economic field, they would remain in the same situation forever. Especially in the context of the Second World War, he demanded that ‘Mahars’ be given jobs in the military department along with other jobs.
In July 1941, the Viceroy Lord Linlithgow set up two bodies. One was the Executive Council; the other was the Defense and Advisory Committee. Ambedkar etc. were included in the latter committee on behalf of the Dalit community. But no one from the Dalit community or the Sikhs was included in the Executive Council. Ambedkar strongly protested this incident.
Fiftieth Birthday
On Ambedkar’s fiftieth birthday, that is, on April 14, 1942, in a big meeting organized, everyone forgot all their differences and gave priority to Ambedkar above all.
After this, another epoch-making event took place. The number of members of the Executive Council increased and Ambedkar was nominated as one of the members. For the first time in the history of India, a Dalit leader took part in the administrative affairs of the Government of India.
The Dalit community across India rejoiced at this event and took a firm pledge of unity. Each ‘party’ and ‘sub-party’ decided to maintain its independent identity and the ‘All India Scheduled Castes Federation’ took the responsibility of carrying out the struggle in a united manner. Then, as the Union Labour Minister, Ambedkar took some important steps in the interest of the workers. In 1948, his much-discussed book ‘The Untouchables’ was published.
Conclusion
In the fifth chapter of the renaissance of Hindutva and the Hindu social system, we find the revolutionary leader Ambedkar. He will remain immortal to us not only as the framer of India’s constitution, but also as the first successful social reformer leader of the Dalit community.
