About the Novel Jiban Sangini
The novel Jiban Sangini (Life Partner) was authored by Jogendra Nath Gupta. In this novel, the author portrays a realistic character drawn from the social fabric of that era. Fundamentally, it is an informative novel shedding light on the subject of marriage among men in the society of that time.
There is a Sanskrit aphorism that states: “Pitahi Param Tapah” (Serving one’s father is the ultimate penance).
The society of that period was governed by patriarchal norms and ideologies. Women typically possessed no independent freedom of their own; even in instances where some liberty existed, male authority remained dominant in every sphere. This novel is crafted around precisely such a theme. In Jiban Sangini, Shyamacharan Babu’s son has been suffering from malaria for a prolonged period; yet, instead of focusing on his son’s medical condition, Shyamacharan Babu sets out to arrange his marriage.
Medical Treatment
The primary motivation behind this initiative is his lack of funds to provide his son with medical treatment. Under these circumstances, he reasons that if he marries his son off, he will receive a substantial dowry from the bride’s father. Believing that this money would enable him to fund his son’s medical care and support his household expenses, he begins making frantic preparations for the wedding.
Zamindar of Nandapur
Shashikanta Chowdhury was a ‘Zamindar’ (landlord) of Nandapur. He grew increasingly anxious to arrange the marriage of his daughter, who had reached a marriageable age. With the intention of finding a suitable groom and settling her in a good home, he summoned Nilmoni Ghatak, a matchmaker. Acting upon Shashibabu’s instructions, Nilmoni set off for Shyamacharan Babu’s residence.
Nirupama
Shashibabu’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Nirupama, was both beautiful in appearance and intellectually gifted. In his quest to find a worthy match for her, Shashibabu had dispatched Nilmoni to various places to gather information; while proposals arrived from different quarters, none met with his approval. Consequently, having finally identified a suitable prospect, he sent Nilmoni to Shyamacharan Babu’s home in Raipur, located in the Hooghly district.
Subodh
Shyamacharan Babu’s son, Subodh, was a B.A. graduate from Hooghly College and was quite handsome in appearance. However, having suffered from malaria for nearly two years, his physical health had deteriorated significantly, leaving him frail and emaciated. Due to financial constraints, Shyamacharan Babu had been unable to provide him with advanced medical treatment.
Tragic Situation
Nevertheless, the marriage was arranged between Subodh and Shashibabu’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Nirupama. Yet, in the midst of the wedding festivities, Subodh was struck by a fever once again; within just two days, he succumbed to the illness. Shashibabu was thus confronted with a truly harrowing and tragic situation. He was left utterly dumbfounded by the tragic fate that befell his married daughter.
