About the Author: Bhagirath Mishra
Born in 1947 in a remote village in Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, Bhagirath Mishra is a distinguished figure in Bengali literature. A postgraduate in Geography from Kolkata, he later served in the West Bengal Civil Service as an executive officer. Despite the demands of his career, he continued to write prolifically, eventually becoming a celebrated author with over 200 short stories, 12 novels, essays, dramas, and travelogues to his name.
Mishra’s stories often reflect the rural landscape of Bengal, the lives of tribal communities, and the socio-cultural transformations that affect them. His experiences traveling through remote villages deeply influenced his narratives, giving them a raw and realistic edge. His magnum opus, Mrigaya (published in five volumes between 1996 and 2000), took 15 years to complete and remains a landmark in Bengali fiction. His other notable works are Aarkathi, Janguru, Amar Ekannati Galpo, Rahasyer Golakdhandha, Shikalnama, Taskar etc.
A true polymath, Mishra is also a magician and bonsai expert.
