He had a successful career in the judiciary and retired as a Chief District Judge. Achintya Kumar took over the publishing of the newspaper ‘Kallol’ in 1925. He was also associated with the newspaper ‘Bichitra’ for a short time.
He received the Jagattarini Award, Rabindra Smriti Award (1975) and Sarat Chandra Smriti Award (1975) at various times for his special contribution to literature and journalism. His literary work was not limited to Kolkata, his books are included in the school, secondary, higher secondary and undergraduate level Bengali literature curriculum in Bangladesh. This timeless and revolutionary writer died in Kolkata on 29 January 1976.
Legacy
He started his career as a temporary Munsif in 1931 and retired in 1960 after being promoted to the posts of sub-judge, district judge and special officer of the Law Commission. Achintya Kumar’s first poem was published in the magazine ‘Probasi’ in 1921 under the pen name ‘Niharika Devi‘.
He was considered one of the leading members of the Kallol group, who were able to make their place in literature after Rabindranath Tagore and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. He is especially remembered for his brilliantly imaginative portrayal of the lives of religious leaders. His first novel Vede (1928) is widely acclaimed in modern Bengali literature for its structure, style of writing, manner of presentation and unique subject matter. His writing is deeply influenced by modernism.
