These stories bore no resemblance to the histories of real people. Nevertheless, they began to collect these tales. Just as archaeologists unearth an old seal or a broken piece of ancient pottery, hoping to glean new information from it, the two brothers wrote down these folk tales, believing they would reveal the nation’s heritage.
But writing down these stories was not easy. The villagers were reluctant to open up to these gentlemen. The two brothers, however, were persistent and refused to give up easily. One day, they approached an old shepherd; after receiving a bottle of wine, he opened up. From afternoon until evening, he recounted many folk tales. Another day, they approached an old woman, who said, “You are young men, why would you want to hear childish stories meant for children? You’ll only laugh at them.”
The two brothers then enlisted the help of a friend, sending his children to the old woman to listen to her stories. She knew many folk tales, and her manner of telling them was very simple and old-fashioned. She began telling stories to the children, while the two brothers sat behind a curtain outside, writing them down. A total of 86 stories were collected, and the Brothers Grimm edited and adapted them into German. Stories like Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Cinderella, and Rapunzel are now known worldwide and have been translated into many languages.
