Introduction
The image of Charbak, the sole representative of materialistic philosophy in India, is not clearly defined. Perhaps this philosophy, in its entirety, will never be fully revealed to us, because, due to a cruel twist of history, almost all of his original writings have been lost. The outline of Charbak philosophy that this book attempts to reconstruct is based on various relevant writings scattered throughout the course of Indian history, although these are primarily from non-Charbak groups.
We do not know what form Charvaka’s philosophy took in these writings. However, we hope that this book will significantly help in introducing Charbak to readers and the general public.
Charbak Darshan (Charbak Philosophy) and Brihaspati
In the arena of Indian philosophy, Charbak philosophy has established its own distinct place since ancient times, standing as a unique counterpoint to Indian spiritualism. Charvaka Philosophy is generally perceived as identical with the materialistic or empiricist stream of Indian philosophy; however, whether Charbak thought is fully expressed solely through this identity remains to be seen.
This philosophy has flowed for a long time on Indian soil, maintaining its unique characteristics alongside India’s spiritual culture. Indian philosophers, in formulating their own doctrines, have often anticipated objections from this opposing viewpoint and have tried their best to refute them through logical arguments.
In this case, we have no other way but to infer the nature of the arguments of both sides primarily from the preparations of one side, because the position of the other side is shrouded in darkness. But the fact that this opposing side, designated as ‘Charvaka,’ possesses the qualifications to stand in this intellectual contest is easily understood from the preparations for the debate.
Well-known Name in the World of Indian Philosophy
Charvaka is a well-known name in the World of Indian philosophy. For our understanding of this philosophy, we have to rely primarily on the writings of others; because only one book, “Tattvopaplavasimha,” is currently available to us as a work of the Charvaka school itself. Even the reflection of Charvaka philosophy found in this book is possibly the conclusion of a particular branch of Charvaka philosophy.
Because the picture of Charbak Darshan (Charbak Philosophy) found elsewhere is somewhat different. Although limited in number and representing only a part of the Charvaka philosophy, the importance of this book as the sole original document of the Charvaka school in evaluating Charvaka characteristics cannot be overlooked. Our understanding of Charvaka philosophy primarily stems from this source.
Jayarashi Bhatta’s ‘Tattvopaplavasimha‘ is believed to have been written around the eighth century.
Several questions naturally arise regarding Charbak Darshan (Charbak Philosophy), piquing our curiosity.
Firstly, at what time did the school of thought, with which the first appearance of the name “Charvaka” is associated in various texts of Indian literature and philosophy in the seventh and eighth centuries CE, originate, and what is the relationship between this early form of the doctrine and the later Charvaka philosophy?
Secondly, the terms ‘Brihaspati‘ and ‘Lokayata Charvaka‘ are used as alternative definitions. Were these two terms used with similar meanings in ancient times? If not, what was the nature of the original doctrines indicated by these definitions?
To find answers to these questions, we must look back into the past, tracing the path of history.
The part of Charbak Darshan (Charbak Philosophy) with which we are familiar finds its fundamental resonance within Vedic culture and the rituals prescribed by the Vedas. Therefore, Charbak doctrine can be called a rebellion against Vedic culture. Many believe that this rebellion, like Buddhist and Jain philosophies, took the form of Charbak philosophy within the vast scope of the Upanishadic period.
The scattered accounts of Charvaka doctrines found in various places shed little light on the exact time of the emergence of this school of thought. However, we can broadly include this period within the larger timeframe of the Upanishadic era.
The author’s late husband, Shri Sudhakar Chatterjee, inspired her in many ways as she progressed with this book.
