He spent his childhood in an unknown place called Giridihi in the Indian state of Jharkhand. His father Shri Narendra Nath Mukherjee was employed there as a lawyer. There he began his studies. In India at that time the British rule was dilapidated. In 1907, the author was expelled from school for participating in the Swadeshi movement, commonly known as the Bangabhanga movement. In 1908, he won first place in the National Education Council entrance examination.
He started his career by joining the National Council of Education in Calcutta. While teaching there, he met Binoy Kumar Sarkar and Radha Kumud Mukherjee. They were teaching at Santiniketan College at that time. Due to the ill health of the author and the death of his father, he could not continue his studies at that time.

At that time he met Rabindranath Tagore. Santiniketan He joined the Department of Non-Formal Education. And in 1910 was appointed as a school teacher. He later joined Calcutta City College as a librarian but after only two years there he returned to Santiniketan and joined there as a school teacher. The author at that time established a meeting called “Rabindra Parichay Sabha” and he undertook the task of writing a biography of the world poet Rabindranath Tagore. At that time he wrote a four-volume book on the life of Rabindranath. The first volume was seen by Rabindranath Tagore in 1933. He is recognized as a unique writer in Bengali literature. Among his works are Prachin Bharater Itihas (Story of Ancient History), Bharat Porichay (Introduction to India), Bharater Jatiya Andolan (National Movement of India) and he wrote a short encyclopedia for children “Gyan Bharati”. In 1965 he was honored by Desikottam and conferred honorary degrees from various universities. In 1981, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in India.
He married Sudhamoyi Tattwabhushan, the daughter of Brahman theologian Sitanath Tattwabhushan. His wife was the founder of Bolpur Girls School, west Bengal, India and was employed as the headmistress. The author spent his retirement at his home in Bhubandanga, Bolpur. There he died on November 8, 1985.
