Poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote the historical Novel Gora

Rabindranath Tagore wrote the Gora novel, is one of the largest and is considered by many to be one of the best novels. Among Gora’s novels, patriotism, women’s emancipation, and social rights are the strongest.
He mentions in this book the various social conditions that prevailed in India at the end of the nineteenth century. The novel was written in the context of the Hindu reform movement and the Brahmo Samaj movement and social rights movement in the late nineteenth century.

The novel Gora was written between 1907 and March 1912. We can also consider it as a historical novel, because he started the story from the late 70s to the 1880s. All the events we see in Gora’s novel are about thirty years before he wrote the novel. Not too old. In the second chapter of the novel, Gora and Binay are both sons of a Hindu Brahmin family and he gives detailed information about the Brahmo Samaj and the present social context of them and analyzes them beautifully. At that time, Keshab Chandra, the founder of Brahmo Samaj, set up a ‘Hindu Hitaishi Sabha’ on Amherst Street with Binoy. At that time Keshab Chandra’s advice and speech aroused great response in Hindu and Brahmo society.

Apart from the birth, mental development and practice of knowledge of the poet Rabindranath Tagore. Gora, the spread of Hinduism can also be seen in the sixties and seventies of the last century. In this period, despite the internal narrowness of religion, under the leadership of Keshab Chandra, Hinduism and other religions became tolerant and respectful. Hinduism, out of pride for its own glory, has not become more tolerant of Christians and Romans than that.

After the generosity of Sri Ramakrishna, it became clear only in Swami Vivekananda. But those events are the aftermath of the Gora novel. In Gora’s student life, he was naturally attracted to the new tide of Brahmanism that came under Keshab Chandra’s leadership. At first, Gora was a rebel, but in the end he came in contact with a Hindu scholar and was attracted to the practice of Hindu scriptures.

The opening of Krishnadayal’s Sadhanashrama and the practice of Hindu scriptures – all of which seem to be Rajanarayana’s attempts to prove the superiority of Hinduism in contemporary history, Hindu fairs and Shashadhar Tarkachuramani – are a novel reflection of Hinduism’s interpretation and practice. Of the twelve novels by Rabindranath Tagore, Gora is the largest and most controversial novel. The novel was published in a series of expatriate magazines from 1907 to 1909. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Indian society was in turmoil, going through different currents of thought and ideology and opposite currents. In this Gora novel, various tragic images of the social position of India at that time have come to light. At that time the Swadeshi movement was gaining momentum in India. Rabindranath Tagore saw both the strengths and weaknesses of Indian nationalism in the context of that Swadeshi movement and made the failure of the Swadeshi movement self-inquiry. It was from that exploration that the poet Rabindranath Tagore, who unveiled the true nature of nationalism, created this white novel. In this novel we notice the touches of the conflict and harmony of society with the individual, of religion with society, and of humanity with religion.

In the fifth chapter of the novel, Gora says, “We will not allow my own country to stand trial as a defendant in a foreign court and try him according to foreign law.” We will not be ashamed, nor will we be proud, to be in perfect harmony with the ideals of the British. I will protect the country and myself from humiliation by proudly taking all that is in the country. With this oath, Gora has started bathing and pursuing in Ganga, has kept Tiki, has started judging caste. Every morning he took the dust of his parents’ feet. He used to call Dada Mahim ‘Kat’ and ‘Snap’ in English. Whenever he saw her, he would get up and bow down. Later we see that Gora started her life with Hinduism and ended it with world humanity. In a word, Gora Upanyas is a historical reflection of Hindu nationalism. Poet Rabindranath Tagore went through the events of the nineteenth century Indian social reform movement, the spread of Western education, the Bengal Renaissance. Social tensions appear considerably at this time. Standing there, Rabindranath Tagore spread the message of secularism and presented to the people what could be the main form of nationalism through this fair novel. So we can say without a doubt that Gora is not just a literature, it is a patriotic novel.

So there is no doubt that this novel will be accepted as a unique novel by the readers. So we have given a link to the PDF file of Gora novel on this web page, so that the readers can easily collect and read the book.
