Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American author best known for creating iconic characters such as Tarzan and John Carter, who have had a lasting impact on literature and popular culture.
In the story, John Clayton (Lord Greystoke) is born in the jungles of Africa and raised by apes. Tarzan (John Clayton, Viscount Greystoke) is a fictional character, a feral child raised by the Mangani great apes in the Congo Basin; he later experiences civilization but rejects it and returns to the jungle as a heroic adventurer. It was published as a novel in June 1914 and later became the first book in a famous series.

He had changed from a savage to a civilized man, but he had not forgotten his past life. So, he repeatedly returned to that past life for the sake of humanity, to fight injustice. These are the stories of Tarzan’s life, —that Tarzan was born in imagination, yet he is very real.

Imagination vs. Reality

Tarzan seems “very real” because the story vividly portrays the natural instincts of man, the struggle for survival, and the conflict between civilization and nature.

But historically, it is a complete fiction. There is no real evidence that there was anyone named Tarzan. Therefore, the statement “Tarzan was born in imagination, yet he is very real” — is correct from a literary point of view. The character is so strongly embedded in the imagination of man that it seems real, but in reality, it is a literary fantasy.
