The first volume of the Bangla Sahityer Itibritta (history of Bengali literature) was written by Asit Kumar Bandyopadhyay. The author published the first volume of a four-volume book,Bangla Sahityer Itibritta (History of Bengali Literature), on a wide background of social history and culture. The author has collected the necessary material from all the researches done by his predecessors on Bengali literature so far and has discussed in detail about Bengali literature and Bengali mind in this book.
In this volume the author discusses from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries. The second volume discusses in detail from the sixteenth century to the first half of the eighteenth century. The author’s third volume covers various aspects of Bengali literature from the second half of the eighteenth century to the nineteenth century. The fourth volume was discussed until the first half of the twentieth century.

While writing Bangla Sahityer Itibritta (History of Bengali Literature, Volume I), the author has received many books from Calcutta University and Bengal Literary Council. He also used some rare books from the Calcutta National Library and the Asiatic Society. In this context, the special cooperation of the authorities of these institutions is significant. While writing this book, the author got new light from some essays of his teacher Ramtanu Lahiri of Calcutta University and Professor Shri Shashibhushan Dasgupta Mahasaya. In this book he has beautifully analyzed the history of ancient Bengal i.e. the establishment of Bengal, Shashanka and Gaur in the Gupta period, the Pala dynasty in Bengal and the censorship in Gaur. Besides, he has discussed in detail about public life style, Sanskrit literature of ancient Bengal, Prakrit apabhrangsa literature, Bengali script and Bengali language, Charyagitika, language and rhyme, content and theory of Charya etc.
