Annada Shankar Rayer Rachanabali (Annada Shankar Ray’s Collected Works) Vol-6
Introduction
Annada Shankar Ray, one of Bengal’s most distinguished literary figures, devoted twelve long years to completing his monumental six-part novel Satyasatya. The sheer effort left him drained, and for a time he could not summon the energy to embark on another full-length novel.
Apart from a handful of short stories, his creative output dwindled under the heavy demands of his government service. Eventually, he realized that continuing in his official post would extinguish his literary spirit, and so he chose to step away from his career to reclaim his pen.
The Early Attempts
Ray’s first attempt to revive his writing came in the form of ‘Na’, a short novel that was not truly a novel but rather a garland of four interconnected stories. The common thread was the theme of the “rebellious woman.” This experiment gave him renewed confidence.
Soon after, he wrote Kanya, another work built from four stories woven together. Though not a conventional novel, it carried a unified theme—the eternal feminine, reminiscent of the spirit of Char Iyari Katha. The book delighted the eminent Dilip Kumar Roy, who remarked, “This is your Char Iyari Katha.” The praise deeply moved Annada Shankar Ray and rekindled his hope.
Towards a Mature Voice
Encouraged, Ray felt his hand had finally matured, ready for a larger canvas. He began Ratna o Shrimati, a novel of heart and soul. Yet after completing two volumes, he encountered insurmountable obstacles both within and outside himself, forcing him to pause. Fearing that idleness would once again erode his craft, he returned to writing and produced Sukh, a short novel.
Expanding His Vision
The demand for more novels grew intense. Rather than waste time, Ray pressed forward, completing the third part of Ratna o Shrimati. He then wrote Vishalyakarani, originally planned as Ratna o Beatrice. The name had to be changed, since this chapter of Ratna’s life followed his romance with Shrimati, and reversing the sequence would have undermined the integrity of the earlier volumes.
A similar situation arose with Trishnar Jal, initially conceived as Ratna o Swati. Though Ray wished to include it in this sixth volume, concerns about price forced him to reserve it for a later installment, and its title too was eventually altered.
Culmination
After completing the third part of Ratna o Shrimati, Ray finally felt liberated—thirteen years after beginning the journey. The entire Ratna o Shrimati series had already been published in Volume Five of his collected works. Volume Six, therefore, presents a different set of novels: Na, Kanya, Sukh, Vishalyakarani, and others. Each of these works captured the imagination of readers, winning their hearts with themes of love, rebellion, and human resilience.
