1894 The picture of social life of Bengali girls for almost one hundred years is captured here. Some are new, some are old, but all of them sincerely believe that one day we will have our signature in Bengali literature. The eldest of the ‘Soi’ was born in 1908, the the youngest in 1931. If they were alive, they would be among us today. They were born in different parts of India, some in East Bengal, some in Assam, some in Bihar, but all of them ended up working in Kolkata, West Bengal.

‘Soi’ is the first organization of women writers in West Bengal. They have no allegiance outside of literature. Here was the birth of ‘Soi’, after a three-day conference of an inter-Indian writers’ organization in Nainan, which saw meetings in ten languages from ten regions of India. Almost all languages have writing groups about the difficulty of holding a pen for girls – not just in Bengali.
On that day decided to ‘signature’! Within ten days, on November 30th, the ‘signature’ was announced. Many of those who expressed enthusiasm in Nainan were not so enthusiastic when they came to Calcutta. Many people who were not in Nainan joined them. Now their chat is crowded.
The book ‘Soi’ has three attributes or aspects – one is signature, then 2nd is ‘sakhi’, and last but not least – ‘endure’.
