The book ‘Higher Secondary Elective Mathematics Volume One’ is written by the famous Mathematician Shri Keshab Chandra Nag. He was born in the Nagpara village of Hooghly district, on 10 July 1893, on the day of Rath Yatra. He lost his father at a very young age. He was brought up by his mother from childhood, his mother was Kshiroda Sundari Devi and his father was Raghunath Nag. He attended a Bengali medium primary school at a place called ‘Gurap’ near their village till sixth standard. After working there for some time, he was again employed as a teacher in Baharampur Krishnanath Collegiate School. From here his fame as a teacher of mathematics spread far and wide. Maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandi heard about this prowess and became a great admirer of him. He allowed her to use their large library to encourage him in mathematics and literature. In that library he collected and studied a lot of information about the history of India and the history of mathematics. As he excelled in mathematics, he paid more attention to mathematics and thought of publishing a book.
In 1909, Sir Ashutosh and his teacher Shyamacharan Bose both wrote a textbook on mathematics for schools called Patiganit. But unfortunately at that time Ashutosh Mukherjee passed away within a few days. Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay’s son Shyamaprasad Mukhopadhyay later undertook the revision of the book and repeatedly requested Keshavachandra Nath to help him publish the book. Ishwar Chandra Nath complied with his request, working day and night with great effort, he revised all that book and the book of numbers called ‘Patiganita’ was published.
Keshav Chandra Nag came in contact with writers Premendra Mitra and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay at that time. Kalidas Roy was his colleague. He gained special knowledge of literature in their company. One day Saratchandra Chatterjee called Keshav Chandra Sen to publish a book on mathematics. From then on it entered his mind, that he would publish a book on mathematics himself. Within a few days he published a mathematics book for students. The book was published as ‘Nav Patiginit’.
After the publication of this book, he gained special fame in Anka Shastra. In 1942 AD, he published Madhyamik Math books, after which he published various Math books for classes IV to XII. His mathematics books were published in English, Hindi, Urdu and Nepali.
