The book ‘Higher Secondary Elective Mathematics Volume One’ is written by the famous Mathematician Shri Keshab Chandra Nag (K.C. Nag). He was born in the Nagpara village of Hooghly district, on 10 July 1893, on the day of Rath Yatra. He lost his father at a very young age. He was brought up by his mother from childhood, his mother was Kshiroda Sundari Devi and his father was Raghunath Nag. He attended a Bengali medium primary school at a place called ‘Gurap’ near their village till sixth standard.

After passing the sixth standard he joined and studied in Yogeshwar High School in ‘Vastara’ village, a few miles away from their village. Communication was not as good then as it is now, so he had to walk to school and return back late in the evening. After passing 8th standard, he joined Kishanganj High School in 9th standard and started his studies with care and attention. In 1912 he passed the first division in the entrance examination.

Then he got admission in science department in Somnath College, Calcutta. Passed the ISC examination and secured first rank. But their family economic condition was very poor. His mother alone was his source of all hope and source of income. As a result he has to face financial problems. Despite passing the ISC examination in the first class, he could no longer study.

In order to earn money, he had to leave his studies and look for work. Finally, he was appointed as a mathematics teacher in Vastara Yajneshwar High School where he studied. Started teaching job. After being appointed as a teacher, he used to educate many students free of cost. After serving for some time, he left that school teaching career for higher studies. In 1917 he passed BA with Mathematics and Sanskrit subjects. Again he started his teaching career as a mathematics teacher in Kishoreganj High School.

Who wrote the HS Elective Mathematics Vol-1?

After working there for some time, he was again employed as a teacher in Baharampur Krishnanath Collegiate School. From here his fame as a teacher of mathematics spread far and wide. Maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandi heard about this prowess and became a great admirer of him. He allowed her to use their large library to encourage him in mathematics and literature. In that library he collected and studied a lot of information about the history of India and the history of mathematics. As he excelled in mathematics, he paid more attention to mathematics and thought of publishing a book.

In 1909, Sir Ashutosh and his teacher Shyamacharan Bose both wrote a textbook on mathematics for schools called Patiganit. But unfortunately at that time Ashutosh Mukherjee passed away within a few days. Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay‘s son Shyamaprasad Mukhopadhyay later undertook the revision of the book and repeatedly requested Keshab chandra Nag to help him publish the book. Ishwar Chandra Nath complied with his request, working day and night with great effort, he revised all that book and the book of numbers called ‘Patiganita’ was published.

Keshav Chandra Nag came in contact with writers Premendra Mitra and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay at that time. Kalidas Roy was his colleague. He gained special knowledge of literature in their company. One day Saratchandra Chatterjee called Keshav Chandra Sen to publish a book on mathematics. From then on it entered his mind, that he would publish a book on mathematics himself. Within a few days he published a mathematics book for students. The book was published as ‘Nag Patigonit’.

After the publication of this book, he gained special fame in Anka Shastra. In 1942 AD, he published Madhyamik Math books, after which he published various Math books for classes IV to XII. His mathematics books were published in English, Hindi, Urdu and Nepali.

Later he also published books for Higher Secondary students. The book was first published as Higher Secondary Elective Mathematics Volume One. He then published another book titled Higher Secondary Elective Mathematics Volume II. His erudition as a professor of mathematics spread far and wide. He was awarded special honors on various occasions.
He showed extraordinary erudition in various subjects of mathematics, especially Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry, Measurement, and Trigonometry. He has not only analyzed the numbers of science department but he also analyzed the numbers of Geography and Geographical subjects beautifully in his various books.

His extraordinary skill, craftsmanship and style in numerology are still being studied by researchers. Such a great Mathematical scholar is rare. His mathematical texts are designated for study in colleges and schools in various parts of India and are adopted as texts for various classes in schools and colleges.
