The  author Nimai Bhattacharya was famous as a novelist, writer and journalist of Bengali literature. Their ancestral home was in Sarshuna village of Magura sub-division of present-day Jessore district of Bangladesh. He was born on 10th April 1931 in Calcutta. He had a remarkable memory from childhood. He remembers only what he once read. His mother died when he was a child (3 years old), so his father Surendranath Bhattacharya taught him by himself. His father’s income was not very good. He somehow managed his family with limited income. So he was admitted to Calcutta Corporation Free School.

He passed every class with honors. Then he studied there for some time due to financial distress he had to move to his ancestral home Jessore. In 1941, he was admitted to the Sanampara Institute in Jessore in Class IV and studied in that school till Class IX. Meanwhile, due to the partition of the country, he returned to Calcutta and there he got admission in Ripon School. In 1948, he passed the Madhyamik examination with honors. He did not go to any other school from where he passed his higher secondary and BA in 1952.

Economic problems started in the life of writer Nimai Bhattacharya. So he has to join the career only after passing the marriage. He started journalism. Worked for 25 years as a Political Diplomatic Parliamentary Journalist for Indian Newspapers in Delhi. On that occasion, he accompanied various Prime Ministers of India on foreign tours and did journalism. Among them are the Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, and he has sometimes visited President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and visited foreign countries.

This is how his career continued. He started writing in this journalism gap. In 1963, he published a novel in Kolkata weekly Amrita Bazar Patrika. After his novel was published, it won wide acclaim among the readers. And within a few days, four of his novels were published again in this magazine.

He wrote more than 150 stories, novels, short stories for children during his lifetime. His famous novel Memsaheb was filmed. The Memsaheb novel was adapted into a film in 1972 and starred Uttam Kumar and Aparna Sen in the lead roles. His notable works are Inkilab, Eamon Kalyan, Rajdhani Express, Anglo Indian, One of Two Down, Akash Bhora Surya Tara, Your Honor, Cocktail, Pather Sheshe, Hare Krishna Jewellers, Jouban Nikunje, Shesh Paraner Kori, Anurodher Asar, Madam, Darling, Nimantran, Hawkers Corner, Minibus etc.

When was his first novel published and in which magazine?

Along with journalism, Nimai Bhattacharya became closely associated with literary thought and practice in his life. In 1963, his first few novels were published in Kolkata weekly ‘Amrita Bazar Patrika’ and received wide appreciation from literature lovers. Later, four more novels were published in that magazine, namely Napoleon, Reporter, VIP and Parliament Street. All his works are very popular among the readers.

From then on, he never looked back. Readers give him the highest honor. Besides journalism, he also wrote many romantic novels and stories. He gained special fame in Bengali literature. Bengali speakers will always remember his contribution to Bengali literature. He was associated with journalism throughout his life besides writing. He also awarded Banga Bibhushan Samman. Finally passed away on 25th June 2020 at the age of 89.
