Where was Srila Prabhupada born?
Srila Abhaycaranaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada appeared in Kolkata in 1896. His father was Gaur Mohan Dey, and his mother was Rajni Devi. In 1922, he met his guru Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur in Calcutta. Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur was a learned scholar of the Bhakti path and the founder of 64 Gaudiya Mathas. He inspired this bright, energetic and educated young man to dedicate his life to the work of spreading Vedic knowledge. Sri Prabhupada studied Vedic education under his tutelage for 11 years and was initiated by him in Allahabad in 1933.
In 1922, Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur instructed Srila Prabhupada to spread Vedic knowledge through the English language. Later, he wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita and helped in the propagation of the Gaudiya Math. In 1944, he independently started publishing a fortnightly magazine in English, which is still printed and published by his disciples all over the world. In 1947, Srila Prabhupada was awarded the title ‘Bhaktivedanta’ by the Gaudiya Vaishnava Samaj in recognition of his philosophical knowledge and devotion.
In 1950, at the age of 54, he retired from worldly life and four years later accepted the ‘Vanaprastha Ashram’. During this time, he concentrated on the study of scriptures, preaching and writing. He continued to live in the Sri Sri Radha Damodar Temple in Vrindavan and began to live a very simple life. In 1959, he took up sannyasa. From this ashram, he translated 18,000 verses of the Bhagavad Gita, including its commentary and significance, and wrote the book ‘Anya Loke Shugam Yatra’.
Where and who founded the ‘Gurukul’ school?
In 1965, at the age of 70, he reached New York City, America, completely naked. There, he worked hard and established an International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Vedic Society) or ISKCON in July 1966. In 1972, he introduced the Vedic education system at the primary and secondary levels by establishing the ‘Gurukul’ school in Dallas, America. At present, several thousand Gurukul schools have been established all over the world. At present, lakhs of students study in Gurukul schools.
In 1972, he established the main center of his organization in Mayapur, Nadia district of West Bengal. He also planned to establish a Varnashrama Mahavidyalaya here for the practice of Vedic education and culture. Here, the practice of Vedic culture and a large Vedic ashram have been established under his instructions. Thousands of visitors, devotees, seekers, disciples and saints from home and abroad gather in this Mayapur Ashram every day and practice Vedic culture.
He left this world of illusion on November 14, 1977. For the benefit of humanity, he has written many books combining Vedic philosophy, literature, religion and culture, through which the people of this world will find a divine world full of joy.
