There has never been a book in Bengali that collects mythological knowledge. We have never found a complete and concise account of the stories of gods and goddesses, ancient geographical information, descriptions of religious books, antiquity, history, ancient culture, various stories, philosophy of life, etc. in one book. The ‘Biography’ of the late Shashibhushan Vidyalankar was the only guide in this regard.
Some mythological accounts are scattered here and there in the Bengali dictionary, but they are few and insignificant in terms of information. We have felt the lack of such a dictionary for a long time. Author Sudhir Chandra Sarkar has filled our long-standing need by compiling this special book. He joined this difficult task about seven or eight years ago, and this ‘Mythological Dictionary’ is the result of his long efforts.

There is no dearth of classical or mythological dictionaries in the English language. The author Sudhir Chandra Sarkar has written this “Mythological Dictionary” based on such dictionaries. Such English dictionaries usually include stories from Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, etc., but Indian mythologies are not included at all, or even if they do, not more than two or three names. Compared to Indian mythologies, these Western mythologies are much less in number. If our entire mythology is collected, there is no doubt that it will be ten to twelve times more than Roman, Greek and other Western mythologies.
The main difference between European mythology and our mythology is that these Western mythologies have no connection with modern European society and literature, they have value only as ancient stories now. And our mythology is alive. Its eternal long-standing relationship with our daily religion, society, work, etc. has been inseparable. The gods and goddesses of the ancients have occupied a sincere place in our life and literature. Moreover, if we compare them, our mythological stories are much superior to foreign mythological stories in terms of their popularity and character development.

Although this book is called Pouranik Abhidhan (Mythological Dictionary), let no one think that it contains only the eighteen Purana and Upapurana. The Vedas, Upanishads, Ramayana, Mahabharata, all the Purana, Samhita, all the ancient characters and stories and events are collected in this book, besides, the proper descriptions of human, God, Khasis, Vaksha, Yaksha, Apsara, Gandharva, Kinnaras etc. are all recorded in this mythological story. The details of how many characters or Vedas were first mentioned and later transformed into Puranas through Ramayana and Mahabharata are found in it. In the Vedas, Varun, Indra, Rudra, Mitravarana, Ashwini, Usha, Marut, Surya, Agni, Vishwakarma etc. have been described in the descriptions of these gods and how they have changed and taken shape during the Mahabharata era and the Puranic era. An attempt has also been made to clearly explain the natural events that have been described with the help of metaphors.
It may be a mistake to consider this dictionary as a group of general dictionaries. Although the subjects are classified and arranged alphabetically like dictionaries, there is a fundamental difference between the two. A large collection of various subjects is found in our ancient religious texts, epics, Puranas, Vedas and other various books, and this book can be called a well-organized collection of them. If the general reader reads these stories one after the other like a story, he will not only get the joy and satisfaction of reading the stories, but will also be able to easily gain knowledge about our ancient social policy, politics, religious policy, geography, afterlife, life, agriculture, animal husbandry, sacrificial rituals, types of worship, marriage customs, etc. Moreover, have such countless and diverse stories been collected in the Puranas of any language of the world?

The characters and stories of the myths are so diverse, numerous and so different that it is very difficult to bring them all into a harmony. The same character has appeared in different forms in different Puranas. Again, there is diversity in their events too. The characters or stories that are in the Vedas have been depicted in different ways through different Puranas. That is why in many places when the gods and goddesses of the Vedas appear in the Puranas, their forms are different. It does not contain other forms or other stories – perhaps in many places their place as gods or goddesses has become high or low. No matter how much diversity and incoherence there is in the different stories, the author has tried to weave these stories in such a coherent way that they may not seem out of place or incoherent.

In our various poems, ancient and modern literature, there are many references to these mythological facts or stories. To understand all those poems or literature, it is absolutely necessary to have knowledge of mythology. Mythological knowledge is necessary to decipher Michael Madhusudan Dutta’s ‘Meghnadabadh Kavya’. This dictionary will be of special help in that task. In this context, the name of poet Satyendra Nath Dutta can also be mentioned, many of his poems are full of quotes from Puranas etc.
We know that there is a possibility of errors in the compilation of such a dictionary. The author has tried to compile this dictionary very carefully. He has received various kinds of help from many friends in the preparation of this book. Bani Kumar, Bishu Mukhopadhyay, Pandit Hem Chandra Bhattacharya and Dhrubajyoti Sen, Sulekha Sarkar, Anima Sarkar and other people have helped the author a lot in the editing of this book.
