Renowned historian Professor Ramesh Chandra Majumdar wrote the first volume of History of Bangladesh (Ancient Age).
Ramesh Chandra Majumdar was a pioneering Bengali historian and professor of Indian history. He is a prominent nationalist historian of modern India. He was a former sheriff of Kolkata metropolis, the capital of West Bengal. He was born on December 4, 1888 in Gopalganj district of Bangladesh and died on February 11, 1980 in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, India.
The first volume of the Bangla Desher Itihas (Prachin Jug) has been written by the eminent historian Professor Ramesh Chandra Majumdar based on the ancient times. Professor Ramesh Chandra Majumdar was a well known professor of Dhaka University. While he was teaching at Dhaka University, the first English-language book on the history of Bangladesh, edited by him, was published. There have been many plans to compose a complete history of Bengal. Lord Carmichael, the Governor of Bengal, first started it in 1912, and in the next 20 years, one or two more attempts were made to publish a complete book on the history of Bengal, but to no avail.

The first complete book on the History of Bengal was published from Dhaka University. The Historical book on the History of Bengal was published and edited by Dr. Ramesh Chandra Majumder. However, this book is written in English. Author Ramesh Chandra Majumdar could not do so despite his best efforts to publish the Bengali translation of this book, as he then retired from Dhaka University.
The authorities of Dhaka University did not show much interest in translating into Bengali. Therefore, he himself expressed his desire to publish a history book of Bengal in Bengali.
