The Bengali novel book Pather Dabi is basically about the demand for liberation of the country from subjugation. In the subjugated India, the Indian citizens were subjected to various forms of oppression by the then British government forces and high ranking officials. To awaken the people with the conviction of multiple demands in the novel Pather Dabi, to create a militant mentality and to help to get rid of the oppression of the exploiters of the ruler.
The English ruler banned the novel book Pather Dabi. Writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote a letter to Rabindranath Tagore to put pressure on the government and lift the ban. Rabindranath Tagore replied, “I have read the book to you. The book is provocative. It means exhausting the mind against the English rule. It may not seem to be the fault of the writer, as the writer cannot remain silent if he finds the English king acceptable. In my experience of traveling to different countries, I have seen that no other government can tolerate so much opposition to the words or usage of the native or foreign tenants except the English government. If they had not stopped publishing your book, then it would have been understood that he was very ignorant about your power in literature and your establishment in the country. You have to be prepared to withstand the onslaught of power”.
The main reason for quoting Rabindranath Tagore’s statement is that what he said in response to Saratchandra’s letter is that this book will create chaos in the society, will create unrest in the society and for that purpose the English rulers have obstructed the publication of the book. Writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay but did not give up. He is strictly in his place. He never backed down from the path of truth. Rather, he pointed to the book and said, “I have written all things knowingly. As a Bengali writer, if I have not resorted to lies and in spite of that, if I have to suffer the monarchy, then I have to accept it, but I should not protest”.
The novel Pather Dabi thus appeals to the people of the country for their strong appeal and protest for liberation from British rule and the path to independence. Through this book, he has appealed to the people of the society, especially the youth, to get rid of the foreign shackles.
This book was first published in 1926. Another major character emerges in this text through Apurba. He was passionate and tormented and mourned by the colonial rule. But since he was weak, timid and immature, he was once insulted by a young white man at a railway station. But he slept quietly, not protesting. He was later seen working as a police informer. Some other important characters in this text are Sumitra and Bharati. They have been vocal in their protest against the traditional social norms, and with the solemn devotion of men, they too have come to the forefront of the protest with the aim of breaking free from subjugation. The author criticizes the book for breaking free from the shackles of subjugation and the status of women in society and the underlying customs of contemporary Indian religion and social structure. He has utterly despised capitalism. He treats everyone with respect and justice. So he wanted to change the traditional social structure. Tried to get rid of rich-poor divide. He has always been in favor of the elimination of untouchability and orthodoxy, which he has beautifully portrayed in this book.
To the readers this book awakens love for the country and helps to be united. No one dared to write such a book at that time. The author’s courage and love for the country and his efforts to free the people from the shackles of subjugation are incomparable.
