With the rare touch of the unique talent of these two short alive great man, new life was breathed into many sections of Bengali literature. But despite this, it is necessary to judge why their contribution in the field of drama literature cannot be recognized as universal.
It is true that from the nineteenth century to the first part of the twentieth century, all the brilliant geniuses who appeared in different sections of Bengali literature. If the creation of Bengali drama literature has not been raised to first-class status as a result of their efforts, there does not seem to be anything hopeful about it in its present featureless age or in the coming uncertain future.
The history of Bengali drama literature from 1795 to 1900 was published in the first volume by writer Ashutosh Bhattacharya. At that time Bengali translation of English plays was seen. Which have occupied an important place in the history of Bengali drama literature. The play ‘Widow Marriage’ written by writer Umesh Chandra Mitra created a unique precedent in Bengali society at that time.
The author has collected many finds of that book and has discussed them extensively in the first part of this first volume. In the second part he unearths some new information about Jatindranath Tagore’s plays.
He has presented various discussions on Girish Chandra Ghosh to the reading society of Bengal by analyzing this chapter beautifully. In this section he also details about Atul Krishna Mitra. A number of students have been able to obtain doctorate degrees from the University of Calcutta through thorough discussions on various aspects of nineteenth-century Bengali drama and research under his supervision.
Who is Bibhuti Bhushan Bandyopadhyay?
Bibhuti Bhushan Bandyopadhyay has received recognition from the university for his extensive research and original research on the ‘Impact of Western and Sanskrit Drama’ on Bengali Drama. At that time Sunil Kumar Bandyopadhyay researched on ‘Girish Chandra and 19th Century Bengali Society’ and Jayant Kumar Goswami researched on ‘Society Portrayal in 19th Century Bengali Comedy’. But the unfortunate thing is that none of them have got a chance to attract the attention of the common dramatist reader even today.
The author thinks that there is a feeling of fear in the publishers on those subjects, that’s why the books on those subjects are not written. He has a history of one hundred years of drama, moreover he has beautifully illustrated the works of Gerasis Lebess, Ramnarayan Tarkaratna, Jagadishchandra Gupta, Umesh Chandra Mitra, Michael Madhusudan Dutta, Deenbandhu Mitra and various plays and dramatists.
