About three thousand years ago there was a famous scholar named Chanakya in India. He was the advisor and prime minister of Raja Chandragupta. Despite being the Prime Minister, he did not receive any remuneration. Instead, he used to perform the duties of a Brahmin by staying in a hut outside the royal palace. In this way, he was under the control of everyone without any patronage. Once Raja Chandragupta asked him for an apology for some work, he said if I have to give an apology for my work, I will resign.
Chanakya’s policy Humanitarian and political advice is still a valuable resource for us. Srila Prabhupada says that he read the verses of Chanakya Pandit as a child. Chanakya’s political quotes and writings are still taught at the undergraduate level. Since he was a famous politician and diplomat, the foreign embassies in Delhi are still called Chanakyapuri.
Srila Prabhupada often quoted Chanakya’s verses in his discourses. So fans were sometimes interested in him and wanted to know more.
Sril Prabhupada wanted his disciples to be educated in principles and at the same time to be proficient in the material world, so that no one could deceive his disciples.
Despite being a Chalukya Pandit, Srila Prabhupada mentioned some of his special principles that can be used in Krishna Bhavan. Srila Prabhupada introduced him as a special person. The author says that while traveling in Hyderabad, he asked Srila Prabhupada, “Is Chanakya a Vaishnava?” Prabhupada of the North did not say that he was a Mayavadi. Chanakya says that wherever you look, you can see the ashes flying, so even if you get them, you can get invaluable Ratan. These advices are not based on his own intellect. These advices taken from ethics like the proverbial Panchatantra are the flow of Indian culture and consciousness. There is a proverb that one fork of time is ten forks of untimely. Since the Indians have such invaluable resources, Srila Prabhupada used them in his discourses and in Krishna thought.
